5 Makeup Bag Essentials

There is a lot of discussion in the bloggersphere about the 'necessary' steps in a makeup routine, or the products you just cannot go without. Whilst this post is about my makeup bag essentials, the things that I use on a day-to-day basis and are in my bag wherever I go, I think makeup is a personal thing and everybody's 5 products will differ. For example, in this list I will always choose to include concealer over foundation as it's much more important to me to get rid of smaller blemishes than have coverage for my entire face, but I know that for others this would be different.

That being said, here are the 5 things that my makeup bag wouldn't be complete without;

1) Mascara.
I personally cannot leave the house without mascara. It's the one thing that I have always used without fail. Even one coat of mascara can make you look so much more awake and ready to face the day. I've tried multiple high-end and highstreet products in the past and I don't particularly have a favourite mascara at the moment. I think it's much easier to get great mascaras on the highstreet than it can be for other products. The only thing that really alters when you go high-end can be the wand. If the application brush is important to you, it would be worth doing some hunting on the internet pre-purchase.

2) Blush.
Powder, cream, I'm not too fussed. I just need blush. As I'm sooooo pale, when I wake up in the morning my skin tone has been known to resemble something that has been 6-feet under for a couple of days. Blush is a vital step in my makeup routine and really does wonders for bringing my face to life every day. My current go-to is either Benefit's Dallas or the Rimmel Stay Blushed in Pop of Pink as it has such a natural rosy tint to it and it's so easy to apply in its liquid form.

3) Lip Balm.
For some people, lipstick is an everyday item that can't be skipped. Whilst I love me a good lip colour, and I really do, getting my lips into shape first is far more important. Winter is always horrible to my lips and I often suffer with sore, peeling lips. This Winter was no different, but my lips are recovering pretty well! With lip balm, I used to make the mistake of applying it every 5 minutes, but I have since learnt that will only work to dry them out even more and make the situation worse. Now I apply the Blistex Daily lip Conditioner every morning pre-makeup and the Vaseline Aloe lip balm every night before bed and my lips have never been happier, even when using lip products and attempting to rock a matte lip during the day. Emphasis there on attempting.

4) Concealer.
Whilst foundation is not an essential for me, concealer is. In the past I'd never really found a concealer that was the right colour for me. In spite of this, I still used them, spots and blemishes can be a reaaaal problem at times. Using the wrong shade is never going to work out well though, as flash photography has proven and I've been caught with a slightly orange circle on my chin/forehead where I'd been attempting to cover a particularly stubborn zit. However, in February, I discovered the Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer in Fair Neutral and there's been no going back. Not only is the formula of this stuff amazing but it actually caters to a very pale skinned girl. Urban Decay, I already loved your Naked range but now you've found a friend for life.

5) Brows.
Just brows in general. Brows have become a much bigger thing in recent years, but brow definition has always been on the beauty scene (Audrey Hepburn, helloooo?). For me, Benefit's Gimme Brow in Medium/Deep is perfection. I do like to fill in my brows with powder sometimes, but when I'm looking for a quick fix the gel-fibre brow product is the way to go. It leaves every little hair looking singular whilst setting them in place for the day, an extra bonus for those of us with a slightly bushier brow game going on.

I love writing a good list-post. As I said above though, everyone's makeup preferences are personal depending on what you want to achieve. If you have enjoyed this post though, let me know as it would make my day. If any of the products have caught your eye, you can get them in My Shop at the top of the page (also here).
