I am now 19 (yaaaay!!) and have returned, still happily together, from my first trip abroad with my boyfriend.

Berlin is unlike any city I have been to before! All the architecture, construction and modern history makes it a such an interesting place to visit. Ross and I only went for 5 days and I don't think we could have packed any more in than we did!

Unsurprisingly, our first mini-holiday was not without mishaps. Within an hour of landing we were both almost fined €40 each for not validating our train tickets...oopss :/ Luckily, there were a group of 6 Italians in the carriage with us who had done the same thing so we were let off. You'd think that because the train station is at the airport, they'd expect that some of the numerous tourists coming into the city may not know that after buying a ticket they have to take it to a separate red box to validate it? Or is that just me? There was no explanation at all. At least we can look back and laugh at it now, €40 richer.

If you are looking for a city that is slightly different, then Berlin is a great place to go. A word of warning, if you go out of high season then most restaurants seem to close a lot earlier than places in France or Italy, so if you're a late eater you may struggle. We spent about an hour and a half walking from the Brandenburg Gate to Friedrichstrasse to find somewhere that was still serving around 10.30pm. Nevertheless, I had an absolutely amazing time and couldn't recommend the city more.

Here are a few snapshots that Ross took over the trip...
